In previous posts we discussed scrapbooking and card making basics. Stamps are a wonderful addition to any crafters tool kit. They can be used in a variety of projects to add a special touch. The same stamps can be used in scrapbooking, cardmaking, journaling, on fabrics, tags, bookmarks and even with clay! Before you get started adding stamps to your crafting arsenal, there are a few things you should know.
Stamp Types
Did you know that there are two different types of stamps? Perhaps you have seen the clear stamps and the traditional red rubber stamps mounted to wooden blocks. Both types of stamps have different advantages and disadvantages.
The clear stamps are made of acrylic polymer. They are easy to store because they come attached to a sheet of acetate. They are very easy to clean with a baby wipe. However, they do have a tendency to stain. They must be stored in a cool place. Hot temperatures can warp the stamps. Acrylic stamps are not mounted to a wooden block and require a stamp press or acrylic block to use. This is advantageous because you can see exactly where you are going to place the stamp on your project. It is important to exercise care when removing the stamps from the acrylic block because they can tear or be stretched.Â
Rubber stamps are more durable and sturdy than acrylic stamps. Rubber stamps typically produce a cleaner, sharper image than an acrylic stamp. They also resist staining better than acrylic stamps. Rubber stamps can also be easily cleaned with a baby wipe.Do not use soap and water to clean rubber stamps because it can dry and crack the stamp. Rubber stamps are less sensitive to temperature variations. They are ready to use right away because they are already attached to a wooden block for use.Â
It is important to note that you can use more than just inks with your stamps. Some crafters will use markers, chalk and paints to apply color to projects. There are even specialty glue pads that can apply a thin layer of adhesive to a project. Glitter can then be applied to the image for extra sparkle. Stamps can also be used with embossing powders. There are so many ways to get creative with stamps. Be on the lookout for our next blog post about using stamps in your creative projects.
