Card Making for Beginners

Cards are given as gifts to mark the significant and meaningful life events. It could be given at a birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation, bereavement or as a declaration of love. Receiving a card gives you something tangible to display, keep and look at when you need a reminder of those kind words and that special moment or day. It is important to start with the basics. They include a card base, an envelope, a sentiment, and embellishments.

Card Bases

The most popular card size is A2. It measures 4.25 x 5.5 inches. Two cards in this size can be made from a single sheet of 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. For a top folding card cut down the center (short side) of the 8.5 x 11 card stock at 4.25 inches. The 11 x 4.25 inch paper strips can then be folded in half at 5.5 inches. For a side folding card the card cut down the center (long side) of the 8.5 x 11 card stock at 5.5 inches. Fold the cut paper strips at 4.25 inches. This will give you a beautiful side folding card. The top folding card and the side folded card are the same dimensions. It is recommended to use a sturdy cardstock for a card base so that it can withstand adhesives and embellishments.

Envelopes

Envelopes can be made or purchased. An advantage to making an envelope is that it will coordinate with your handmade card. Envelopes can be made to fit custom sized cards as well. A custom size envelope may be needed if there are foam pop ups or shakers. Envelopes can be made out of cardstock. Using a stiff envelope is a good idea if you have fragile embellishments. You want your handmade cards to withstand the shipping in the mail.

Sentiments and Embellishments

The fun part of making cards is embellishing. Sentiments can be handwritten. They can also be cut out with a die cut machine or with an electronic cutting machine and glued to the card. Sequins, glitter, die cuts, embossing powders, gems, enamel dots, ribbons, charms, and stickers can be used to decorate the card.

A handmade card is meaningful to the recipient and just as attractive as any store bought card. They are one of a kind, not mass produced, with generalized sayings. Every handmade card is unique. They can be personalized specifically for the recipient unlike store bought cards.

There is no need to shop around for premade cards at your local stores. Making a handmade card is simple, easy and fun and we have everything you need at Country Craft Creations.
